Tuesday, December 31, 2019

This is it, kids. The last day of the 2,019th Foul Year of Our Lord. Depending on how you measure these things, it's the end of the 2010s as a decade. By the time we see each other tomorrow, it'll be 2020 and we must ponder just what all that means.

Monday, December 30, 2019

The rain's moved out and the cold's come back. I find myself in the grip still of whatever surly funk got a-hold of me Friday. Gloomy and tired as opposed to quarrelsome and irritated, really, but I don't know why the change. It is what it is, I guess. Perhaps it's a natural progression.

Sunday, December 29, 2019

Well, the Saints pounded the Panthers this afternoon, slapping Will Grier and his boys all over their home stating, ending the season 13-3. Takes one back to the 2009 season when Brees, Payton and the lads brought their first Superbowl trophy back to the still-battered New Orleans faithful.

Saturday, December 28, 2019

I've been in a bit of a quarrelsome mood the last couple days. It's a good thing no one's paid me any attention, because a couple of days of that is all I can stand. I just don't have the energy or will the be that professionally salty anymore. That's a young man's game.

Friday, December 27, 2019

As we head towards what will be the very last weekend of this decade... wait, is that right? Does a new decade start on the '00 or the '01, I never can keep that straight. Anyhow, this time next week it'll be 2020 & may the Lord have mercy on all our souls.

Thursday, December 26, 2019

Man, I don't get it. Day before yesterday, the Gibberish at the Blogger site (WordPress stuck with straight News) got beaucoup hits. Yesterday, the flat-out Gibberish at WordPress topped my previous record for "Likes". It was just seven all told, but still. I'm sure there's a lesson in all that, but I'll be dipped if I know what it is.

By the by, Kwanzaa starts today, so "Habari gani?" and I do hope I'm doing that right.

Wednesday, December 25, 2019

Wednesday, December 25, 2019

Man, yesterday's Gibberish got 15 hits. I know that doesn't sound like a lot because it really, really ain't - and I'm not even sure how much traffic Blogger sees these days, comparatively - but it's the most I've gotten in one day on one post since I started writing again. Is it because I had "Christmas" labeled? I guess so. And, of course, the News at the WordPress sight scored a goose egg.

Monday, December 23, 2019

Whew, son. I'm not going to lie to you, beloved. I've had a rough day and I'm in no shape to do this. Still, duty calls, even if softly.

Sunday, December 22, 2019

Sunday, December 22, 2019

Today's the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and the official beginning of winter, it's been pouring down rain all day, and for the fourth day hand running I don't really have anything in particular to write about. Because it's raining, Otis can't go outside and has already spent all day napping, so he's pouting, too.

Saturday, December 21, 2019

Saturday, December 21, 2019

This is getting to be a drag, man. This is the third day hand-running that I've had a touch of writer's block. Starting to get on my nerves.

Friday, December 20, 2019

Friday, December 20, 2019

Friday's upon us, it's definitely winter outside, and another day I'm just not into doing this. So, we'll knock things out quick and move on to the weekend. I doubt I'll be in a better mood, but hope springs eternal.

Thursday, December 19, 2019

Thursday, December 19, 2019

I've been pretty out of the loop today. Slept far too late then spent the remainder of the day playing video games, napping and reading, purposefully ignoring the outside world. I only logged into Twitter about an hour ago.

Wednesday, December 18, 2019

UPDATE: At 7:30 p.m. Hillbilly Standard Time, the House voted to impeach Trump on two articles, abuse of power and obstruction of justice, and fairly handily at that, sending it on the Senate for trial. Trump's rally tonight in Michigan is going to be off the goddamn chain, son.

Well, it's going down. The United States House Of Representatives are holding the vote to decided whether or not President of the United States of America Donald Trump should be charged for two charges of impeachment for trying to entice a foreign company to dig up dirt on a political rival and for obstruction of Congress. As of right now, it's looking like the vote is going against Trump and since everyone has to give a speech, the vote takes all goddamn day.

Tuesday, December 17, 2019

Okay, we're riding with the King. Let's knock this out, because I ain't going to lie to you. I had a breakthrough in Pathfinder: Kingmaker and have been able to get myself past the next chapter. I'd rather be doing that.

Monday, December 16, 2019

Monday, December 16, 2019

I'm going to go ahead and knock as much of this as I can. We got some fierce weather to the north of us and to the south of us. Heavy winds, lightning, a few killer tornadoes, the whole nine yards. Stay above water, kids. At any given moment, the power might blip out and it could last all evening. Let's hope it don't.

Sunday, December 15, 2019

Sunday, December 15, 2019

Hoo, I'm really not in the right frame of mind for this, nor am I inclined to try to stir anything up with the News. I'm more wired & tired than anything, and the grays are slumping down on me. I'll just leave it open until I hit the mark. Your fair warning: all gonzo after this, and gloomy gonzo at that.

Saturday, December 14, 2019

Saturday, December 14, 2016

For whatever reason, I wrote a thing about the Royal Guardsmen's hit "Snoopy vs. Red Barron," rock & roll's Missing Years, and just the general recognition that we're answering the wrong question, as is my wont. It's all on the Tumblr site and it's a pretty good sized chunk of gibberish, so if that's you thing, go dig.

Friday, December 13, 2019

Friday, December 13, 2019

It's another cold, grey, rainy day, and therefor another day that was good for dropping out of the scene. So, let's see what kicking around today before we settle in for the weekend.

Thursday, December 12, 2019

Thursday, December 12, 2019

I've been pretty much out of pocket today, so we'll keep this short and sweet. Of course, every time I say that I wind up rambling on for a couple thousand words. I wrote a thing on LaBelle over at the Tumblr site, and it was a lot of fun if you're more interested in that. In any event, let's quit fooling around.

Wednesday, December 11, 2019

Wednesday, December 11, 2019

It's a new day. The sun is shining, the temperature's warmer and what snow we did get has melted off the roof. We've got some stuff to get into today, so let's get to it.

Tuesday, December 10, 2019

Tuesday, December 10, 2019

Another nasty day, nastiest one we've seen in a while. The temperature's stayed in the 30s and we've seen rain, sleet and even a little snow. Nothing's sticking here, but some places in the Viewing Area saw a nice little blanketing. On the upside it'll be cleared out, for the most part, tomorrow and will be somewhat warmer.

Monday, December 9, 2019

Monday, December 9, 2019

Three days, hand-running, the Dark Cloud has settled on me. It's a weird feeling, I recognize that the wheel has rolled around to emphasize the blues. However, I'm not the complete mess I usually when this comes around. Progress, I guess.

Sunday, December 8, 2019

Saturday, December 7, 2019

Saturday, December 7, 2018

It's been a good day. Had some free time, so I communed with the front yard to come back inside and to write something. About two hours later, I communed with the front yard again to come back inside and write something else. It's been lots of fun. I will put a jump with links to both, however you choose. In any event, this is going to be extremely short and sweet.

Actually, I think that's it. This is an example of what I'm going to do when I change the new way of doing things. Not sure what to call it yet. Something catchy or something straightforward? For now, let's take a nod from Umberto Eco and call it The Project. Hopefully I won't attract anyone who thinks I should sacrificed or hounded to death or whatever gets done to the protagonists of Foucault's Pendulum.

Anyhow, I'm crashing and it's early yet. I wonder if I will play something. I was getting back into Neverwinter Nights 2, but I've come upon a part where I keep getting stomped in the dirt. I must be doing something wrong. Maybe I'll get into one of those games I bought on the last Steam sale, Rebel Cops or American Fugitive. I returned Phantom Doctrine since it's in next month's Humble Bundle. I'd bought it on sale, but ten bucks is ten bucks. I've been getting a Pathfinder jones, and I see a big plot point dead ahead. Might as well sack up and see what happens.

I've been reading Punktown. It's good but a slower lead that I prefer. The plot needs to be thick but it's slowing the story down. A future detective noir space colonies thing with maybe a hint of Lovecraft coming. Finding terrifying things that don't belong because of poking around the universe in a space ship that probably couldn't exist anyway is a concept not played to as much in my liking in modern literature. Still and all, a fun book, but maybe too much a chaw right now.

I guess I'll take a nap. Click below if you really need to. Otherwise, there ya go.

Thursday, December 5, 2019

Sometimes it's a slow news days because I'm lazy or really not in the right frame of mind to deal with anything, much less the strange land we currently wander through.. Sometimes it's a slow news days because it's a slow news day. Those aren't bad, mind; it's nice to able to take a step away from the maddening crowd and think on things. We really don't give ourselves the opportunity to day that near enough.

Monday, December 2, 2019

Monday, December 2, 2019

The Sleep whipped me big time today and I didn't get near as much accomplished as I wished. The extra time to commune with the front yard was nice, but it was just too damn cold today to enjoy it. Any, let's get down to the business at hand.

Sunday, December 1, 2019

Sunday, December 1, 2019

Ah, Sunday morning coming down and going home. After yesterday's heavy rains and blustering thunderstorms, today was fairly pleasant. Cool and windy, but nice enough.

Saturday, November 30, 2019

Saturday, November 30, 2019

You know, there's just not a lot in the News that interests me. Trump said something stupid, not considering he might ought to sit down, shut up and concentrate on not being impeached. I still say it's not going to matter one way or another. Study on it, both anyone who's actually not bullshitting when they say the won't vote for Trump and neither will the MAGATs, if they got one thing in common it's that their opinion on Trump viz. 2020 is pretty much decided.

Thursday, November 28, 2019

All across America, families are either sitting down at the table or they're letting their belts before they go into a glutton coma. Here in Mississippi, we're taking bets on who's going to win the Egg Bowl. Not being a partisan on the matter, I'm giving it a solid win to Ole Miss.

Wednesday, November 27, 2019

Wednesday, November 27, 2019

Okay, let's roll in on this and knock it out.

Ain't going to lie about it, but I am not in the mood to do this. I'm a little cranky, sure, which is sort of funny after the week I've had. Nice visit from the brother and sister-in-law, Momma in a good mood, my medicine bag refilled, and this-&-that, I'm still a little put out with no discernible reason. I told the Psych Doctor that this whole writing business was as much fun as I've had in the past 10 years that didn't involve LSD or mushrooms. That cut him up.

In any event, I'm in a foul mood and here we are. Part of it is absolutely the on-going problem with my sleeping. Still, infernal machine or no, I am not getting any rest no matter how much I sleep during night, nap during the day or catch a quick 40 in the evening. I am always bushed, always could go right back to sleep as soon as I wake up.

And honestly, there isn't much that grabbing going on in the news. Impeachment's slowed down a bit, though it seems Trump is busy looking for a suitable bus to throw Rudy Giuliani under, just a couple days after the former New York City mayor claimed he had some "insurance" if the president pulled just this sort shenanigan. Once again, reality proves that it is not going to make any sense as Devin Nunes rolls in the campaign contribution despite looking like a complete fool during last two weeks' of testimony.

On other fronts, things are looking shakier for the Trump people. A review by a Department of Justice's internal government watchdog into the Russian allegations poke some holes in the dipstick's defenses, as it found no evidence of spying by the FBI. Just as an aside, it's amusing to see the Right almost uniformly turn its back on federal law enforcement organizations as soon as the Flabby Emperor gives 'em the thumb down. The Mushy Middle and Respectable Liberals, despite what wingnuts claim, are always fairly down with such organizations, but those wingnuts also think Hilary Clinton is a red-eyed socialist who can't stop singing "The Internationale".

Same thing with people getting miffy at Barack Obama breaking his silence just to remind everyone that he ran, governed and never pretended to be anything else than a slightly left-leaning centrist, which is extremely conservative in the rest of the sane world. For me, I couldn't care less what Obama has to say about anything, past president or no, because whoever gets the nomination, he's not going to throw his weight behind Trump or even some misguided third-party run by a billionaire far too in love with the smell of his own farts. Take your pick which one.

What else. I went off on what I think is a pretty good rant on Twitter concerning the idea that racial tension will be solved if people "come together". It's silly because, and let's be real here, black people don't owe us white folks patience or understanding when we still can't wrap our heads around the idea that "the n-word" will get your ass beat nine times out of ten, regardless of how many black friends you have.

Well, honestly, I'm kind of done. Maybe last week sapped me in some way, because I did put a lot into it. I picked up some indie games via Steam's Autumn Sale, so maybe I'll mess with them tonight. As likely as not, I'll probably read until I fall asleep. I should finish off Vampires Don't Sparkle tonight. Anyhow.

Tuesday, November 26, 2019

Tuesday, November 26, 2019

Once again we ride with the King. So we're going to indulge in that. Fair warning: if you don't wish to deal with gonzo, quite possibly don't quite badly, move on. Anyhow.

Monday, November 25, 2019

Monday, November 25, 2019

Another week begins, so we might as well get to it. We'll start off slow, since I really wasn't able to pay much attention today. I do want to start the move to a M-W-F schedule for the News, but today ain't it.

Thursday, November 21, 2019

Thursday, November 21, 2019

Well, that is that. We've heard all the testimony concerning the impeachment of the President of the United States of America, the third time it's happened in the nation's history and only the fourth time proceedings have gotten this far. Now it's all over but the crying.

Wednesday, November 20, 2019

Wednesday, November 20, 2019

You know, I can kind of sympathize with Trump's most recently bellyaching about how mean everyone is to him over this whole Impeachment business. It is getting somewhat sad to watch how bad it keeps going for him and the poor dumb bastard keeps pretending he's smelling like roses. But then I think, screw him, the crooked bastard. He could've enjoyed his money and left everyone alone, but no.

Sunday, November 17, 2019

Sunday, November 17, 2019

Spent another night trying to liberate the Earth from alien domination, and didn't notice the time until morning again. So, another day of being a zombie but I've already written all about XCOM I can think of. Ah, well, we'll do what we can.

Saturday, November 16, 2019

Saturday, November 16, 2019

You know, I was saying this weekend needed to be more relaxing and that the whole Impeachment business needed to give a poor boy a rest, but damnation, did I mustard that one up. It's my own fault, though. Like my friend and spiritual advisor, the Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, said, "what I used to do all night now takes me all night to do".

Friday, November 15, 2019

Friday, November 15, 2019

Maybe this weekend will let up on me. I'd much rather write about XCOM or blues harmonica or the terribly interesting book I'm reading or anything else but this big ol' goofy world. Nevertheless, if reality insists on being silly, it's my duty to lay it out and make fun of it.

Thursday, November 14, 2019

Thursday, November 14, 2019

You know, after last night's slog, I had sort of planned to take it easy today. Maybe talk about video games I'm not playing and why. Unfortunately, the morning started off stupid and just got more depressingly dumb as the day went on. In writing this a bit early, I'm sort of worried what would come next.

Wednesday, November 13, 2019

Wednesday, November 13, 2019

Well, I'll be honest with you. I never thought they'd pull it off. Even up until the moment it started, I figured there'd be some weaselly political flim-flam going on to stop it in its tracks. But here we are.

Tuesday, November 12, 2019

Tuesday, November 12, 2019

It is a cold out there, boy. Seriously cold, that sharp, cutting cold you get when there's moisture in the air. It's currently 29 degrees and got as low as 24 this morning. Worse, it never got higher than 35 plus we got a dusting of snow, which is unusually early for this part of Mississippi.

Sunday, November 10, 2019

Sunday, November 10, 2019

Dad-blamit, the Saints lost, 26-9. Coming off a bye week but 7-1, rampaging through the season, and they get dominated by a 1-7 team. Worse, it was the damn Falcons. There was some hinky shit going on in with referees, but Atlanta just outplayed them. Sloppy play from the Saints didn't help. And damn Alabama got slapped around like cheap goons by LSU yesterday, to boot. So there's some joy in New Orleans tonight, but not much. No joy in the Thompson house, though.

Saturday, November 9, 2019

Saturday, November 9, 2019

It's Saturday night. Twenty years ago, I'd be drunk by this time, or high at least, trying to come up with something to write. Now, I'm sitting staring at a computer screen trying to come up with something to write but I'm sober. Yep, it was all downhill from there.

Friday, November 8, 2019

Friday, November 8, 2019

Well, I've been siting here staring at a screen for the better part of an hour trying to come up with a clever opening. There comes a time when you just have to admit it ain't happening and move on with your existence. For what it's worth, that little bit of wisdom works in oh, so many scenarios.

Monday, November 4, 2019

Monday, November 4, 2019

 Well, shoot.

Okay, see, I have fairly severe sleep apnea on top of everything else. It's part of the reason I used to zombie through my old job apart from, you know, complete misery. These days, though, my hours are my own. However, I try to maintain a regularish schedule, if for no other than doing so seems to help keep the Black Clouds away.

Sunday, November 3, 2019

Sunday, November 3, 2019

Well, the dad-blamed kitten is still on the Hill. Otis has been barking at him all day, and as soon as Otis leaves the yard, the kitten walks right in. That means I've had to pull Otis off him at least once and the day's not done yet.

Saturday, November 2, 2019

Saturday, November 2, 2019

Back when I still did the Facebook thing, I'd say I felt bad for anyone who wasn't in New Orleans during a beautiful Fall day like today. Well, I don't know if I pity anyone who's not in Mississippi on a today like today, but it was particularly nice. Cool but without the bite we've had the past couple days. It was cold as all get-out this morning but once the sun was fully in the sky, it was a pleasant day all around.

Wednesday, October 30, 2019

Wednesday, October 30, 2019

I'm really not in the mood for this today, so let's fill some space and get some exercise. You got a problem with it, request a refund.

Tuesday, October 29, 2019

Tuesday, October 29, 2019

Thing that gets me is people are still shocked at how low they'll go. I know some folks are financially invested in pretending conservatives in general and the Republican party in particular aren't giant goddamn hypocrites who'll drop every proclaimed principle at the drop of a hat for the least little bit of edge. But let's be grown ups here.

Sunday, October 27, 2019

Sunday, October 27, 2019

Another lazy Sunday has come and gone. The sun kept behind the clouds, rains misted the ground and I stayed in bed and read about Socrates while listening to country blues. Recommended.

Saturday, October 26, 2019

Friday, October 25, 2019

Friday, October 25, 2019

The rain's moved in and it's been coming down all day. Perfectly suited for extreme napping. However, Tropical Storm Olga has kicked up in the Gulf and is heading our way with more rain this weekend. Fine by me.

Thursday, October 24, 2019

Thursday, October 24, 2019

I was telling both the Therapist and the Psych Doc that the most difficult part of all this was coming up with the opening paragraph. It's not exactly a lede for a newspaper story or an opening paragraph for an essay, because whatever this is, it isn't either of those. Anyway.

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

After yesterday's big storms, it has cleared out and gotten pretty cool hereabouts. Beautiful weather, though. I've said it before about New Orleans, but Fall in Northeast Mississippi is when it shines, as well. What Daddy would call "football playing weather".

Monday, October 21, 2019

Monday, October 21, 2019

The much-promised thunderstorms we were promised have moved and are slowly easing along. We've gotten plenty of rain but nothing like the nasty weather Dallas or even Shelby County saw. Otis is pouting at me because I won't let him go outside.

Sunday, October 20, 2019

Sunday, October 20, 2019

Sunday morning coming down. First one in a long time without a net, and it's not so bad. Granted, I spent most of the day reading Ambrose Bierce, watching the Saints, and napping, so what do I know.

Saturday, October 19, 2019

Saturday, October 19, 2019

Not real sure where or what to start with today. It's been a pretty lazy day, Saturday notwithstanding. Even Otis was ready come back in and go to bed by the time I'd brought the newspaper back up the hill.

Friday, October 18, 2019

Friday, October 18, 2019

Better frame of mind today, despite the grayness of the sky. It's cool and there's a bite in the air. We've got another storm, Nestor, brewing in the Gulf and rain's a-coming. Batten down, y'all.

Thursday, October 17, 2019

Thursday, October 17, 2019

I pretty much checked out today. Just couldn't deal with the rest of the world. All I've done interesting I talked about yesterday and, right now, I don't care to dig into the News. So... yeah.

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

Hey, working without a net here. Let's see how it goes.

Grouchy bastard.

My therapist lets me go on my little rants, and at the end she’ll say, “What you hate is stupidity.” And I’ll say, “No. What I hate is cruelty and greed and mendacity. Stupid is most often a frame of mind and due to your own perception.”
And there’s days like today when a quick waltz through a post-Democratic debate makes me realize that, yep, I do hate stupidity. Everyone’s an expert in politics now when you know they couldn’t be assed to vote or even pay attention before we all got smartphones with Twitter apps.

Friday, October 11, 2019

I should go ahead and get this knocked out, I suppose. Less enthusiasm and more obligation, but I'm the one who made this bed.

How Fast Are You Moving Through The Universe?

We're moving through the cosmos at roughly 2.8 million mph or around 800 mps. Furthermore, there's nothing you can do about it but hold on. Sort of explains everything, doesn't it?

Thursday, October 10, 2019

Someone needs to spread this around.

His cult won't care, though. This is the president they've been waiting for. They think he's due whatever he wants because rich.

Thursday, October 10, 2019

The weather's still cool and thunderstorms threaten on the horizon. I'm half tempted to drive down to New Orleans once the rain moves out. Early Fall is the best time to be in New Orleans. The city shines then.

Wednesday, October 9, 2019

The last couple of days have been heavy (for me, anyway) so the Sleep stomped me stupid today. So let's just have a little fun. It's still weird out there, kids, but let's catch our breath.

Saturday, September 28, 2019

Saturday, September 28, 2019

I want to get this down before I forget it.

I dreamt I was back in school & had four different thesis papers due... & I had nothing. Dreams don't stick with me so much, but I think the best I had was rough ideas. All around me, people - the usual mix of childhood & adulthood friends & acquaintances, all mixed together & all at the ages I best remember them, natch - were preparing for all the term papers & theses with food for students, places to work & new printer ribbons at the ready, & I was just sort of moseying along in an increasing panic but not really doing anything about it.

And then I woke up. Now, I'm sure this is just another of my recurring dreams (fears of going back to school & being a bust), & why it chose to manifest itself as term papers is, well, understandable. I used to be really, really good at writing term papers. In fact, I think two of my best overall best pieces of writing were term papers/theses: one on the history & impact of Hank Williams, & one on how sexism shaped the development of American pop music.

I actually wish I could go back & revisit that last one, because a whole lot has changed - both in the pop music industry & America's relationship with sexism - in the past 20 years. I don't know if either still exist, though. I've long since abandoned cataloging everything I've written. Maybe they're stored somewhere, I don't know.

Anyhow, there's that dream. I'm just glad it's not another where I have some sort of romantic life partner thing going. Those are a bit depressing.

A COUPLE HOURS LATER

That's what Momma is currently listening to Alabama whip up on Ole Miss. Her Aunt Marie had one of them, she said, & she always wanted one, so she bought this one from a place in Fulton owned by someone I went to school with, apparently. It was made in 1945, or so the paperwork says. For the longest time she thought it didn't work. It'd power up but you couldn't do anything about getting a signal.

Her sister & sister's granddaughter were visiting, & the granddaughter didn't know what it was. Seriously. She's smart as a whip but she has a way making me feel old, being completely oblivious & unconcerned with anything that happened before she was born. For her, radio's are in cars & occasionally something that might way less than five pounds. Anyhow, the whole concept of vacuum tubes might as well been coming from Venusians, & she noticed something was just slightly off its track, & thus, made it work.

Like I said, she's smart as a whip. We have an unusual but warm relationship. I didn't see her so much growing - or much more than normal as far as the family visits go - but she's got the same sort of sensitive quirks & fascinations I have. She has a much sharper brain than me & just about anyone I've known since I was in college. Nothing but love for everyone I've met since college, but it's definitely been a different atmosphere.

Her mom & I were close as kids, but adulthood has taken us on different pasts. She has the family's allegiance to the Missionary Baptist take & her own part of it's... let's just say it could be much worse & just move along. She's one of the three people in my family that I've told I was an atheist & the only one that was an absolute mistake. Even Momma told her to leave me alone.

Plus, she doesn't really want me to spread tales from my rough & rowdy days & give her kids ideas. I don't mind & try to follow her wishes. Her youngest is about to leave the nest, her husband is about to retire, & she'll have fulfilled her obligation to the State of Tennessee. So she's got enough problems without one of her kids dropping acid 'cause of me.

But the daughter & I can slip her mom (my cousin), we always have a good time. She's a big fantasy reader, leaning into the "Urban Fantasy" genre. I couldn't tell you who, all people I've never heard where Harry Potter's just the first taste. So she appreciates my esoteric, random interests. She knows her mom, so it keeps us both out of trouble. She also suffers from depression & anxiety. So we got that in common, too.

Since moving home, my overall family's been much more understanding of what I'm dealing with & more sensitive to what I'm going through, much more so than they would've 20 years ago. It has been a rough two decades have been rough enough, on me & them. But they've learned & grew, she's benefited from that growth as much as I have.

Okay, enough of that. I just thought y'all would like that picture. It's got a good sound; I can hear the football game pretty good if I was inclined to do so but I'm not. This has been a weird day. I've been out-of-sorts all day, not irritated so much as melancholy. I've been actually listening a lot of music lately & that's always a sign of the blues. Still haven't played any games nor have I found a story worth reading.

Nothing heavy, man, I'm just tired & I don't know why. There's really nothing worth attention in the news. Impeachment's still trickling out, Hong Kong is still howling "no", & all the normal weirdness & insanity of Living In The Future is what it inevitably is.

It's Saturday evening just before the Sun sets. In New Orleans, this is the perfect time of day. Honestly, Northeast Mississippi is not a'tall bad. It's a bit too hot, but not too, too hot. Enjoy the afternoon & pass it to the left.

Thursday, September 26, 2019

The last couple of days have been hectic, & honestly, friends & neighbors? I'm tired. So we're just going to Fill Up Space here to keep the chops up & call it a night. I am wired & inspired, so let's go.

"The Boss was a certified monster who deserved to be impeached & banished. He was a truthless creature - a foul human monument to corruption & depravity on a scale that dwarfs any other public official in American history."
 - Hunter S. Thompson, Kingdom Of Fear: Loathsome Secrets of a Star-Crossed Child in the Final Days of the American Century.
Well, well. Well, well, well. What an afternoon. I left the house this afternoon to see the Therapist & while all that was going on, all hell broke loose.

Sunday, September 22, 2019

As the weekend draws to a close, I must say that's been a fairly pleasant one. The weather's been very comfortable, no major family issues popped up, & the president managed to get through the weekend neither saying nor doing some rock stupid.

Third day of the Sleep whipping me pretty bad. I can live with it, though, as I got nothing better to do.

The arrogance of people online just blows my mind. You have a podcast, a vlog, or a YouTube channel.  So does everyone else. Seriously, it's ridiculous how much clout folks think these things - which is available to everyone who has internet access - will give them. Especially on Twitter, which is available to everyone with a smart phone & time to kill. We forget that everyone having a megaphone means you're probably not adding anything to the cacophony.

Well, it has been a couple weeks.

Stonewall Jackson - "Help Stamp Out Loneliness"

Stonewall Jackson - “Help Stamp Out Loneliness”
Jackson wound up suing the Opry for around $20 million in lost wages & damages in 2006, saying that officials told him he was “too old & too country”. The suit was settled out of court, & he’s still a member though I don’t think he preforms anymore.

Stonewall Jackson - "A Wound Time Can't Erase"

Interesting tidbit: Stonewall Jackson - & that was his name, not a nickname - was the first singer signed to the Grand Ole Opry before he got a recording contract.

Robert Duvall-It Hurts To Face Reality

"It Hurts To Face Reality”
This is from the 1983 film Tender Mercies, one of if not the best movies about country music. It knocks Nashville’s dick in the dirt, anyway. While it would’ve been nice to hear the song performed by its composer Lefty Frizzell - or even Merle Haggard - Robert Duvall does an excellent job as the blasted out honky-tonk survivor Mac Sledge.

Thursday, September 19, 2019

You know, getting these things started may be the most head-cracking thing about this. Particularly when you're life is as dull as mine & that's consider a positive. In any event, let's jump into it.

Navy Confirms UFO Videos Posted by Blink 182 Rocker Are Real and Should Not Have Been Released

Nope. Don't believe anyone had this in the pool.

Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Well, I might as well get this started. I am wired but unfortunately not inspired. More like indebted. Uninterested. Like driving to work. I'm choosing to see this as a positive but hang tight, buckaroos, it could get goofy.

What really is the Great Attractor?

It never ceases to completely blow my mind when I try to wrap it around on how just enormous it is & how we're just a tiny little speck. And that's just what we can observe, there might be whole other cosmos out there forever beyond our ability to see them. Good way to start the morning.

Tuesday, September 17, 2019

Tuesday, September 17, 2019

Not really sure where to start today. It's still hotter than blazes outside & the world keeps turning. So let's go. I will say I'm going to be mocking people who think "it's just jokes" is a reasonable defense for anything, so if that upsets you, you might want to move along.

Hank Williams - "Mind Your Own Business"

One of my proudest moments as a scholar was talking a teacher into letting me write a term paper on Hank Williams. I still think it's one of the best things I ever wrote.

"Move it on Over" - Hank Williams

This was Hank's first real big hit, reaching #4 in 1947. It's also the cover that turned me into a Hank Jr. fan.

Hank Williams - "Rockin' Chair Money"

This is another one that was fattened up & released after his death. However, since the original was a better quality recording, it doesn’t sound quite so weird.

Hank Williams - "Low Down Blues"

This was later released in 1952 with extra musical accompaniment added to it, but it sounds awful weird.

Hank Williams - “I Don’t Care (If Tomorrow Never Comes)”

Hank Williams - Honky Tonk Blues

Remember what I was saying yesterday about steel guitars? Well, this but even more so.

Hank Williams Sr... I Saw The Light - 1948

Maybe Hank Williams died for our sins. You ever think of that?

Hank Williams - "My Sweet Love Ain't Around"

It's Hank Williams' 96th birthday. This may be my favorite song of his that isn't "I Saw The Light".

Monday, September 16, 2019

You know, I would be listening to the Monday Night Football game if the greedheads who run ESPN were just satisfied with chunking ads at me every 10 minutes. Instead, in honor of steel guitar great Ralph Mooney (who would've been 63 today), I'm listening to Waylon Live, which is an excellent album to listen to for whatever reason.

Sunday, September 15, 2019

I signed out yesterday with the argument that it was a slow news day, relatively speaking. No Friday dump, & I figured we'd coast into Monday with little more than new hurricane news (dick move, y'all).

Whew buddy, was I wrong about that.

Alice: Season 5 - Clip "Jerry Reed Guests"

I’m sorry. I just know what it’s like to find someone else who’s country - no matter if it’s not your perception of “country” but it’s country nevertheless - in a place with no country folks. Like a light in the darkness.

The Mavericks - "Dance The Night Away"

The Mavericks featuring Flaco Jimenez - "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down"

The Mavericks - "Dance The Night Away" (Official Video)

Ted Hawkins - "Sorry You're Sick"

This is my brother's favorite song from this guy.

"Bring It Home Daddy" - Ted Hawkins

"Happy Hour" - Ted Hawkins

I played in a country band for a while & brought this song into the covers collection. Always went over well. Nothing like a good heartbroken waltz.

Ernest Tubb - "Drivin' Nails in my Coffin"

Ernest Tubb was great, man, even if he sort of favors my 6th grade math teacher.

"Tomorrow Never Comes" - Ernest Tubb

 Aww, Billy Byrd...

Ernest Tubb - "Thanks a Lot", 1966

 Aww, Leon...

Friday, September 13, 2019

It's Friday the 13th & there's a Harvest Moon. Everyone knows what that means. That's right, absolutely nothing, it's just a coincidence &, in any event, none of those superstitions have any basis in truth. What'd you expect me to say? I'm a hardcore cynic & materialist, kids, you need to know.

Life in Northeast Mississippi

Have to admit, this place is never boring.

A State Park Road man said he was on his way to work around 6 a.m. when he saw a white female sitting in the middle of County Road 1282 near the landfill drawing pentagrams in the middle of the roadway. He thought it was suspicious and wanted authorities to be aware of it.

Yes, yes. Fake news...

An interesting piece from Poynter Institute. Do check it out.

Why Do People In Old Movies Talk Weird?

 Huh. Well, how about that.

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

I'm wired & inspired, so we might as well jump into this before it slips away. I'll probably take another nap before this day's over with.

Tom T. Hall - "That's How I Got To Memphis"

This is one of my all-time favorite songs & I don't think anyone's done a better cover. I don't know if I'd be willing to fight about that but it'd a rough road convincing me otherwise.

Monday, September 9, 2019

Monday, September 9, 2019

Late start to the day & a late nap has thrown me off schedule, so let's knock this out. I guess it's payback for being done by noon yesterday.

Otis Redding Performs "Respect" on December 9, 1967

This was recorded in Cleveland a day before the plane crash that took Otis' life, along with members of his band The Bar-Kays. The surviving members of the band went on to have a fairly respectable recording career with the '70s version of Stax Records. Note, he borrows from Aretha Franklin's definitive cover. "That little girl just stole my song," said Otis the first time he heard Aretha sing it. The man knew.

OTIS REDDING - I Can't Turn You Loose

Pure Otis Redding. Another he’d intended to finish but the road kept him busy, so it’s just two minutes of Otis going nuts. Awesome groove, but anyone who tries to cover it sounds a fool.

"Nobody's Fault but Mine" by Otis Redding

This album, The Immortal Otis Redding, released in 1968 after his death might be my favorite standalone album of his. It was mostly finished when he had his crashed - Otis had recorded tons before his death, the road kept him so busy - & Steve Cropper finished it up. Lots of fun & a great coda.

Otis Redding - "Don't Mess With Cupid" - Live in Olympia Paris - 1966

 Big country rascal.

Otis Redding "Shake" and "I've Been Loving you too Long"

Otis Redding - “Shake” and “I've Been Loving you too Long”
From the Monterrey Pop Festival, where Otis blew everyone off the stage (except maybe Jimi Hendrix).

"FA-FA-FA-FA-FA (Sad Song)" by Otis Redding LIVE 1967

This is from the Live In Europe album, & features both Booker T. & The MGs & the Mar-Keys.

Signatures May Get Medical Pot on Mississippi 2020 Ballot

via Signatures May Get Medical Pot on Mississippi 2020 Ballot | Jackson Free Press | Jackson, MS

This is encouraging, but it would do well to not get one's hopes up. In short, Mississippians For Compassion Care gathered over 100,000 to get medical marijuana on the ballot. From what I can tell, it'd be like in Arizona, where you must have medical permission, rather than it just being for sale. It's at the Secretary of State's office & has to clear that first.

Apparently, marijuana extract is no longer on the state's banned substance list. Gov. Phil Brown's not down with the idea, but his time in office is almost up. Of his two possible successors, I think Jim Hood might could be persuaded. I don't know about Tate Reeves. He strikes me as the type that'd say no just because it'd make some people happy.

Given what we've learned about the increase in suicide rates in rural areas, it might not be a bad idea. Furthermore, this state's eat up with meth & the pillheads are driving the opioid crisis to frightening places.

Just some free advice, fellas. Shit's going to snap here soon; would you rather have a soma or actually do something to fix this state?

I got a little weird & wrote about Motorhead below, so go there unless you want some just random thoughts.

"Born To Raise Hell" - Motorhead

Going to tell a story below, so feel free to either click on or just enjoy the video. Up to you.

Motörhead - "Overnight Sensation" (Live)

From the live DVD Boneshaker: 25 & Alive. This version's a wee bit sloppy but it'd take a sorry dog to hold that against Motorhead.

The Ramones - "I Don't Want To Grow Up"

This was written by Tom Waits & probably sold me on the Ramones. Their last album, go figure.

Jimmie Rodgers - "T For Texas (Blue Yodel #1)"

Blue Yodel No. 9 by Jimmie Rodgers (1930)

Told you, Jimmie was bad like Jesse James.

Interesting tidbit about Jimmie Rodgers. He died in 1933, at the height of the Depression. At the time of his death, he accounted for fully 10% of RCA Victor's sales. Remember, this was when record companies & consumer cash was thin on the ground. That ain't bad a'tall.

"In the Jailhouse Now #2" by Jimmie Rodgers

This was my grandfather's favorite song, I'm told. It fits because he was a bit of a rascal.

"Gambling Bar Room Blues (1932)"

Jimmie Rodgers, the Original Gangster.

Waiting for a Train by Jimmie Rodgers (1928)

This may be my favorite Jimmie Rodgers tune.

"California Blues" by Jimmie Rodgers (1928)

Today is Jimmie Rodgers' birthday. He was born in Meridian in 1897. A professor of my brother's tried to prove he was born in Alabama, but fuck that guy.

Thursday, September 5, 2019

I can hear the start of the 2019-2020 football season in the living room. The Bears up against the Packers, classic football match up with a hot crowd promised a good game I've searched around the net but I can't find any place running. Amazon Prime showed it via Twitch, but I guess they're not doing that this year. Ah, well.

The Pacifist Democracy That's Survived for Nearly Two Thousand Years

On my trip to Europe several years ago, I never got close to San Marino but I appreciated the vibe. Northern Italy struck me as calm if not overly patient. The area reminded me at once New Orleans while at the same time Panhandle Florida, but I acknowledge my perception might be insufficient to deal with the reality. I could've spent a month or more in Venice.

The weather's even pleasant, or at least not alarming all of the time. San Marino, that is. It's like it came from Douglas Adams' discarded joke file. Well, let's be serious, Douglas Adams used every joke he to keep from having to write new ones.

Anyhow, seems a very relaxing, bucolic locale & I'd like to go there if someone wants to send me. I'll write about it & it'll be entertaining.

Before I get down to the evening's entertainment, I want to share this. It's a link to where folks can help with the aftermath of Dorian in Bermuda. These are just the off-the-wall ones, as there is no shortage of mainstream ones. Give if you can, & this will be updated.

I always used to hate coming up with headlines when I was in the newspaper business. With this, since I don't bother with headlines (just the date), the onus is on the opening paragraph to grab reader's interest. Honestly, though, I'm tired & my head's not firing tonight. Make your own damn introductory paragraph.

American Media is Bad and Here's Why - SOME MORE NEWS

Among other points concerning the problems in the mainstream media, he makes a really good point about the death of local journalism. One company owns every newspaper in Northeast Mississippi. I’m not sure about radio - though I do know there’s more stations that are pre-recorded & not local - but a couple three companies own all the television stations.

 Just something to think about.

Biggus Dickus - Monty Python, Life of Brian.

From what all I've heard, the Pythons didn't tell the extras playing the centurions about Palins' affected lisp or the whole "Biggus Dickus" bit. They just told them not to laugh. The look of fear on the guy on the right when Palin mentions his wife is the funniest part of this.

It's been bucketing rain all afternoon but the storm's moved away. All we hear is the distant roll of thunder, like the last mumbled complaints of a bad argument. It's been hot & humid for the past couple weeks without a cloud in the sky. A storm is brewing in the Gulf, hurricane season has been quiet but it's not over. Never turn your back on hurricane season, kids, it will kick your teeth out.

Tuesday, August 20, 2019

The Funk has its claws deep in me. I am down & discouraged with things in general. I can't help but wonder if this is worth the effort, if there's anyone paying attention, if I want anyone to pay attention. Maybe I just should find another kitchen hereabouts & consider that's it. The Funk plus the Sleep is tough to deal with, it's like a one-two punch. Still, the Work demands.

Monday, August 19, 2019

Monday, August 19, 2019

I stayed up too late last night, my sleep mask slipped off at one point, & I've felt out of sorts all day. Really, I'm not up for this & frankly don't give a shit. But this is Work & Work Must Be done.

Sunday, August 18, 2019

Sunday, August 18, 2019

Sunday morning - & afternoon, heading into evening - coming down, indeed. Decent enough day & decent enough mood. The anxiety & skittishness of the past couple of days has seemed to pass. I wonder if it was yesterday's medication run to Tupelo. Momma, the Therapist, the Psych Doc, the Little Brother, the Sister-In-Law, the Better Angels, various relatives, they all say I do need to get out of the house more & interact with real people, & I know that - to a certain degree - they're right.

Saturday, August 17, 2019

Saturday, August 17, 2019

The Sleep overtook me today, & I just let it happen. The cruddy feeling & foul mood of yesterday continued, so I feel I didn't miss much. I'm in one of my down moods, where I don't want to do anything much beyond stay asleep & not dream, or failing that, stare at the wall/moronic videos on YouTube. Today was that sort of day, & I just didn't feel like dealing with it.

Friday, August 16, 2019

Friday, August 16, 2019

It's Friday, another day of suffocating heat. I feel like I have red-clay mud flowing through my veins instead of good, old blood. This how I used to feel before I spent the week in the hospital to learn I'd have to spend the rest of my life taking Elvis-sized handfuls of pills for hypertension. I thought it was just because I hated work, but nope. No sir, the old blood pressure was pinging at 270/160. That is too high. I should've been spurting blood like a mook in a Zatoichi movie.

Thursday, August 15, 2019

Thursday, August 15, 2019

Last day of the teeth cleaning regime. Things look as good as they can, which just about sums up my philosophy of life more than damn near anything, I'd bet.

I'm glad to see everyone's alright. I don't even pretend to give half a damn for racing in general or NASCAR in particular, but Dale Earnhardt, Jr. always struck me as a good ol' boy.

Hey, how's that for "journalism", cowboy? I've decided to not pay any attention to any pundits on Twitter no more than I have to. That goes double for, well, guys like me: straight white cis middle class bourgeois males from this particular stretch of time. I know what I think. Unless, of course, it's like Paul Krugman on economics or Kevin Kruse on history, & they know their shit, even if it's the most specialized bland, basic shit, it's still good to know. People say shit like "that's Econ 101" like the fundamentals don't matter.

"Wild Night" by Frankie Miller & Brinsley Schwarz

This is a great cover of a great song. I used to play in a band that played this song. Loads of fun to play.

Addendum

 It's Momma's birthday. She's 70 & still being loud.

Wednesday, August 14, 2019

The Sleep got me today & got me good. Slept in after letting Otis out, was barely conscious for maybe hour, & then slept until three. Woke up, zombied through the gym, supper & a commune with the front yard. I feel anxious & ill at ease, afraid to make decisions or make any sort of impact on the rest of reality. I couldn't tell you what spurned any of it on because I can't think of why myself. Yesterday was a good day, today was a worry from the get-go.

But I preserver & am calming down. Downside is I didn't go to Work today &, thus, haven't been able to Pay Attention. And I don't care, the world's a mess but Enon Holler's fine. It's you I feel sorry for, bubba. Wish I could help, I truly do, but I don't see anywhere I could do you much good.

Tuesday, August 13, 2019

Tuesday, August 13, 2019

I'm going to take it easy on the politics today. It's starting to wear me down. This is a young man's game, & I'm afraid I simply don't have enough rage to do it properly. That doesn't mean I won't do it, I just won't do it every day. I wonder if I've gone far enough in this to give it a miss here & there. I probably shouldn't, helps to keep up, I suppose.

Went & saw the Psych Doc today. This was more of the "pleasant chat" type visits rather than a "fix Matt" type visit. He did up my Wellbutrin, however, & we discussed the possibility that starting it helped usher this along. I admit, I have long been uncomfortable with the chemical aspect of my mood, even though I know the positive effects I have had from taking them, both now & in the past. Regardless, I haven't had an adverse reactions & I do like me some mind-altering chemicals.

Monday, August 12, 2019

I am very tired & not particularly in the mood for this today. The heat is fierce & getting worse. It'll stay in the 90s all week & might break 100 by the weekend. No relief in sight, either, just more foul heat & humidity.

The Sleep is still on me, not quite as strong as it was, but it's coupled with difficulty falling asleep. So, that's always fun. The end result is I am basically not into doing this today, but since it'd be a damn shame to break the streak, we'll do something. So let's see what pops up.

Sunday, August 11, 2019

The Sleep is still on me today. I don't know why, I slept pretty good last night. Even went to sleep early (for me) around 11:30 p.m. But it's Sunday & Sunday's should be for lazy. It's blasted hot out, heavy with humidity. I wonder if we'll get some more rain this evening.

I can't really touch on much today. I did get a chance to commune with the front yard, & that's always pleasant. More information about the world's horrors have either come to light or been confirmed. There was another mosque shooting, this time in Norway. No one was killed, thankfully, but the shooter did express sympathies with the dickhead out in Texas. His "manifesto" was posted on something called "endchan", which apparently as bad as the rest of the "-chans". There also evidence he might be like the Christchurch shooter, trying to be what the kids call an "edgelord".

The Sleep is on me today. I didn't rest well last night, & all day I've been sluggish & dragging. Didn't do much besides sleep today, actually. I'm a little tired & run down from the week, & sleeping was more disinterest in dealing with the rest of the world than anything else.

NFL Owners Have Always Been Terrible. It's Just That Now The President Is Worse. by Charles P. Pierce

Interesting little article by Charlie Pierce about the absolute bastardry of NFL owners in a world where the President of the United States is even worse.

Technical Difficulties, I'm sure.

I don't know what I did to monkey up that last entry. If you have any trouble reading it, here's a link to my Wordpress page. It's basically a mirror of this until I think of something clever to do with it.

Maybe I should write all these out on Google Docs before I commit. Maybe I'm taking all this way too seriously.

A quick thunder shower just blew through & it's hot & humid outside. Otis in his cave because the ground's pretty wet & he can't go outside. I'm sitting here listening to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's seminal Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy. Specifically, "Mississippi Rain", which is about coming back to a small town & not really belonging anymore. Yeah, that hits home.

I've been home over a year, & my world barely leaves Enon Holler. It occurred to me this morning that with this whole helping to run the election, I'm not only reconnecting with part of my past, I'm becoming part of the community again. I don't seek out my school friends. Be honest, most of them I really didn't like all that much back then. Most of my life, especially my youth, I've been treated as something of a punchline. To be fair, I am a bit of a goofball & Mississippi is mean as hell.

The Sleep is upon me today. I used the infernal machine last night & slept fairly well, but I've got that dreary languor that I cannot place its cause. Same dragging feeling, same zombie mindset. Anyhow.

Hey, remember that big round of arrests the ICE did yesterday at chicken plants across Mississippi? The one that came just after the company, Koch Foods, just got through paying out over $3 million on a sexual harassment case? Yeah, they cut half of them loose, emotionally scaring no telling how many kids on the first day of school of the year for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Good job, y'all.
